A clash between communities on the border of Langtang North and Mikang local government areas in Plateau State has resulted in six deaths and left thirty people injured. The conflict, sparked by land disputes, escalated over the weekend, leading to the burning of forty houses and grain storage facilities.
Plateau State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Musa Ashoms, said the clash was due to the absence of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, noting that people resorted to violence instead of peaceful solutions. He lamented the situation where long-time neighbors took up arms against each other.
While security forces have intervened to contain the situation and prevent further escalation, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and former Governor Simon Lalong have since condemned the incident.
Governor Mutfwang, through his Director of Press and Public Affairs Gyang Bere, expressed condolences to the victims and criticized the clashes as unnecessary and unacceptable. He further urged dialogue as the most civilized means of conflict resolution.
Lalong, representing Plateau South Senatorial district, also mourned the victims of the clash and called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the violence. He admonishes citizens to choose peaceful dialogue over violence in resolving their differences.
