Court Boots Deposed Emir Bayero Out of Palace, Orders Police to Evict Him Immediately

A Kano High Court has issued a directive for the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, and four other deposed emirs to stop parading themselves as traditional rulers. The court also ordered the police to evict Bayero from the Nassarawa royal residence.

The ruling by Justice Aliyu, came after Aminu Babba-Dan’Agundi, a titleholder, obtained a federal high court order restraining the Kano State Government from enforcing a new law that dethroned the monarchs. The court’s injunction specifically bars the deposed emirs from acting as the Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye.

The court instructed the Commissioner of Police in Kano State to take immediate control of the Emir’s palace on State Road and to ensure Bayero is evicted. This measure is intended to maintain peace in the region.

The court also stated that the deposed emirs must be served the order through the police commissioner, who is responsible for its implementation. The motion on notice is scheduled for hearing on June 11, 2024.

The order reads “An order of interim injunction is hereby granted restraining the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th Defendants either by themselves, servants, privies, and or any other persons or officers serving under them or acting in connection with any other person from parading themselves as Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed by the Applicants.
