Foreigners and their representatives will be prohibited from purchasing agricultural products at the farm gate, according to the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
This means that in Nigeria, farm produce may now only be purchased directly from farmers by licensed and properly registered local buying agents.
The restriction was announced via the federal government’s verified Twitter account, @NigeriaGov, on Wednesday.
“We’ll employ commodity associations, which farmers are members of, to ensure proper implementation,” the Minister o Industry, Trade and Investment, Niyi Adebayo stated while commenting on the development as part of the FEC approval. He said a bill will be created by the attorney-general to facilitate the execution of the new policy.
