Controversial socialite Bobrisky, also known as Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, has filed an appeal against his conviction for Naira abuse.
Filed by his lawyer, Bimbo Kusanu, the notice of appeal aims to replace the six-month imprisonment sentence with a fine of N50,000 per count.
Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court, Lagos, had handed down the sentence on April 12, 2024, emphasizing its deterrent effect on currency abusers.
Bobrisky had pleaded guilty to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s four-count charge on April 5.
In the appeal, Bobrisky stated that his punishment was unfair, given his lack of prior criminal convictions and cooperation during the investigation.
He argues that the trial court’s decision contradicts the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), which allow for lesser sentences for first-time offenders.
The appeal also criticizes the court’s emphasis on foreign perceptions of Naira abuse, urging a focus on Nigerian law instead.
Bobrisky urges the court to reconsider his sentence and impose fines instead of imprisonment, citing a miscarriage of justice in the original judgment.
