On Friday, 17 people were killed in a fiery collision between a Mazda bus and a tanker at Ishara Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
Mr. Ahmed Umar, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, verified the event with reporters in Abeokuta, the state capital.
He said the collision happened at 5 a.m. and that the number of people involved in the accident was yet unknown.
He went on to say that the accident was caused by a route violation and reckless driving, which resulted in a head-on collision and a fire.
He added that the command was unable to determine which of the vehicles was at fault, noting that the bus was from Lagos and the truck was from New York coming from Ibadan.
He further stated the two vehicles involved were a Mazda bus with the license plate ZT 28 KLD and a tanker with the make and model unknown.
According to the FRSC supervisor, only one guy, one female, and one child could be identified.
The automobiles were partially obstructing the service lane, he said. The crash, according to the sector commander, should have been avoided.
He expressed his condolences to the crash victims’ families and encouraged them to contact FRSC Ogere for additional information about the incident.
