AAJS Conference to Explore Africa’s Representation in Japanese Media

The African Association for Japanese Studies (AAJS) is set to hold its 2026 conference at Lead City University, Ibadan, from October 13 to 16, with a focus on how Africa is represented in Japanese media.

The conference, themed “Reimagining Africa in Japanese Media: Narratives, Representations, and Influences,” will examine the stories, images and narratives through which Africa is presented to Japanese audiences.

Discussions will also explore whether Japanese media representations challenge or reinforce existing stereotypes about Africa, as well as whether such portrayals reflect African realities or are shaped by Japanese perspectives of the continent.

The conference is expected to provide a platform for discussions on media, culture, identity and the influence of representation on perceptions of Africa.
