The House of Representatives has refuted allegations of demanding a bribe from Binance Group, a cryptocurrency company, and has rather launched an investigation into the escape of Binance Executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, from the National Security Adviser’s custody in March.
“This House will not stand idly by while its integrity is questioned,” said Kama Nkemkanma, a member of the house representing Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo Federal Constituency, who championed the motion. “We must get to the bottom of this bribery allegation and ensure that those involved are held accountable.”
Binance had alleged that unknown persons in Nigeria demanded huge payments in digital currency to “make their problems in the country go away” after a meeting with the House Committee on Financial Crimes. However, the House of Representatives denied the allegations, citing breach of privilege, and re-invited the company to ascertain the claims.
“We are committed to transparency and accountability in our dealings,” said the Chairman of the House Committee on Financial Crimes. “We will not tolerate any form of corruption or bribery, and we will investigate this matter thoroughly.”
Anjarwalla, a British and Kenyan citizen, served as Binance Africa’s Regional Manager and was facing trial over allegations bordering on tax evasion. He escaped from custody while under a 14-day remand order and was scheduled to appear before the court again on April 4, 2024. Reports of his apprehension by Kenyan authorities were later denied.
“The escape of Anjarwalla from custody is a serious breach of security and a slap on the face of our judicial system,” said Nkemkanma. “We must investigate this matter and ensure that those responsible are brought to book.”
The House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes had resolved to issue warrants of arrest against Binance executives for failing to appear before it for an investigation in March. The investigation into Anjarwalla’s escape and the bribery allegations will continue, as the House seeks to uncover the truth behind the claims.
