An Abuja-based Chinese supermarket, located at the China General Chamber of Commerce, was closed by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) on Monday, following reports of its refusal to offer service to Nigerians.
Officials from the FCCPC took a decisive action by sealing off the supermarket following an investigation after getting reports of discrimination against Nigerians by the owners of the supermarket.
Nigerians had voiced their indignation on Sunday regarding the market’s policy, which restricted entry solely to Chinese citizens while excluding Nigerians.
Shaibu Sanusi, the facility manager, acknowledged that while Nigerians within the complex could shop from it, those from outside were barred from entry into the supermarket.
Upon interrogation of Nigerian workers at the supermarket, FCCPC officials deemed it necessary to seal the premises.
Despite the closure, concerns remain about individuals possibly hiding within the supermarket to evade confrontation with the agency.
