In a tragic incident at Yar’Gwanda village in Tsanyawa Local Government, Kano State, an attempt to retrieve a phone which fell down a pit latrine, has resulted in the loss of lives of three individuals.
It all unfolded on a Sunday morning when Malam Danjuma, aged 60, along with his son Ibrahim, 35, and Aminu Gaye, also 35, met their untimely demise in a pit latrine.
According to reports from Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, the tragedy struck when Danjuma accidentally dropped his phone into the pit latrine. In a bid to rescue it, he found himself trapped.
Abdullahi explained, “Danjuma was trying to retrieve a cellphone that fell into the pit latrine when he got trapped. Thereafter, his son entered the pit toilet to save his father and also got trapped. Gaye and Alasan also entered to rescue both men and got trapped.”
Though Abba Alasan, aged 28, was fortunate enough to be rescued, the efforts to save the others ended in sorrow.
Upon receiving the distress call, the Kano State Fire Service promptly dispatched a rescue team to the scene. Despite their swift response, the situation had already turned dire.
Abdullahi recounted, “We received an emergency call from Tsanyawa Fire Station at about 11:00 a.m. from one Aminu Yar’gwanda, that four men had been trapped inside a pit latrine. We immediately sent our rescue team to the scene at about 11:15 a.m.”
Tragically, Danjuma, Ibrahim, and Gaye were retrieved unconscious, while the fourth individual was thankfully rescued alive. However, despite their best efforts, medical personnel confirmed the devastating news at Bichi Special Hospital – three lives lost, and only one survivor.
The victims have since been handed over to the authorities, with Mr. Iro Lado, a superintendent of police at the Tsanyawa Police Division, taking charge of the somber proceedings.
