An Assistant Superintendent of Police, Ukam Efut, was killed on Tuesday by unknown gunmen at a security checkpoint at Agwa in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State.

A community source who narrated the ordeal said that the gunmen met the cop and his colleagues on May 3, 2022 at around 4pm, at the checkpoint where they mounted a roadblock and were collecting money from illegal oil dealers, and opened fire on them, while the other officers were able to escape with lots of injuries but Efut in the other hand could not because he died on the spot and his private part was chopped off.

The Chairman of the community, Ekene Onyejiekwe, told newsmen that the remains of the slain cop had been deposited in a morgue in Owerri.

A police source however expressed dissatisfaction at the incident saying that the dead officer was newly posted to the area and had just two years before his retirement.

The police spokesperson for the command, Micheal Abattam, is yet to react to the incident up till now.

The source said, “It is not up to two months that he was transferred from Abia State to the area. He was the administrative officer and had two years to his retirement before he was murdered. It is really painful.”
