Nigeria’s foreign affairs ministry has stated that the first group of evacuees from Ukraine will arrive on Thursday.

Gabriel Aduda, the ministry’s permanent secretary, made the announcement in a press statement.

According to Mr Aduda, “the chartered flights (Air Peace, Max Air) will depart on Wednesday, March 2, to pick up Nigerian evacuees back home.”

According to him, the Nigerian embassies in Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia got 650, 350, 940, and 150 people from Ukraine, respectively.

Mr Aduda added that Max Air will transport 560 people from Romania, while Air Peace will transport 364 people from Poland and 360 people from Hungary.

On Monday, the Nigerian government said that Nigerians fleeing Ukraine would be evacuated beginning on Wednesday.

Nigeria’s foreign affairs minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, revealed this during a meeting with House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.

According to the Nigerian embassy in Ukraine, there are about 5,000 Nigerian students in Ukraine.

Despite sanctions imposed by the US and its allies, Russia launched a military attack on Ukraine on Thursday and has continued to do so.

The situation remains severe five days into the conflict, with major Ukrainian cities such as Kyiv and Kharkiv already being targeted. Russia, on the other hand, claims that it is solely targeting military targets.

At the Ukrainian-Belarusian border, Russia and Ukraine have begun unconditional negotiations.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine last week, at least 136 civilians, including 13 children, have been murdered, according to the UN human rights office.

400 others were injured, according to UN human rights spokeswoman Liz Throssell.

Ms. Throssell stated that the true death toll is likely to be substantially higher, noting that 253 of the victims were killed in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk areas.
