Crowds of people celebrated on the streets of Conakry, Guinea’s capital city, following the reports that a group of special forces soldiers had detained President Alpha Condé and taken control of the country.

The rebel group, led by Lt Col Mamady Doumbouya of Guinea’s special forces, released a video statement in which Doumbaya said they had seized control of the West African country, dissolved the government, and temporarily closed the country’s borders.

Below is the summary of his speech at the occasion:

Fellow Guineans,
The socio- economic situation of the country, the failure of the state institutions, the disrespect of citizens human rights, the endemic poverty, the corruption, the politicisation of the administration have all compelled the Republican Army through the National Committee for the Rally and Development of Guinea to rise up to its responsibilities to the citizens of Guinea.

We have decided to dissolve the constitution, the government and all state institutions.

The land and air borders are hereby closed.

We are also inviting our men and officers in the security forces to unite so that we can respond to the legitimate aspirations of Guineans.
We encourage everyone of our colleagues to remain in the barracks to continue their regular duties.

We would not repeat the past mistakes.
