Barely 24 hours after losing his senatorial bid, the Senator representing Enugu East, Chimaroke Nnamani, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The former Senate President was defeated by the senatorial candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Kelvin Chukwu.

Chukwu won the seat after having polled 69,136 votes to defeat Nnamani, who scored 48,701 votes.

Chukwu clinched the Labour Party ticket in a rerun primary, following the gruesome murder of his elder brother few days to the presidential and National Assembly polls.

In a statement on Monday, Nnamani said his decision to dump PDP was made after consultations with his associates. He also stated that the irreconcilable differences with the national leadership of the party played a vital role in his decision making.

Weeks before the Presidential election, the former Enugu State governor, had declared his support for President-elect and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu. Subsequently, he was expelled by the leadership of the PDP for alleged anti-party activities.
