Chief Ebenezer Babatope, elder state-man and ex-Minister of Transport on Thursday disclosed President Muhammadu Buhari has not taken a bold step to curb continual kidnapping and killings by Fulani herdsmen in the country, especially in the South-West region.
Speaking in a chat with newsmen,Babatope, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), disclosed that the president’s hands appeared outied to deal mercilessly with the present situation because he is of the same Fulani stock as the armed herdsmen.
He said: “Buhari’s government is not doing anything at all to curb the killings by Fulani herdsmen. I don’t know why he is hamstrung or why his hands are set back on taking actions to put an end to the killings; maybe it is because he is also Fulani man like these herdsmen.
“But the truth is that he is not doing anything to curb this insurgence. It is completely wrong for a group of people, the Fulanis to take it upon themselves to be killing, incapacitating and kidnapping people at will and carrying out other criminal activities.”
To put an end to the crisis, Babatope disclosed the President must do his possible best by giving more powers and order to security forces to deal with the situation, adding that people may be pricked to defend themselves if the government can’t protect them.
“I think the federal government should do more by giving more power to our security forces to deal with the situation. It doesn’t help anybody for our country to be held into bondage by these people. The president must put a final stop to these abductions and killings.”
